The world requires a song of us in the midst of our hardest
trials and afflictions. Psalms 137:1-4
"By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when
we remembered Zion. We hanged our harps
upon the willows in the midst thereof. For there they that
carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that
wasted us required of us mirth", saying, Sing us one of the
songs of Zion".
"How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land"?
This Psalm is
describing Israel's captivity by the Babylonians. In 586 B.C.
Nebuchadnezzar's forces totally destroyed the temple and the
city of Jerusalem, killing and taking more captives. At this
point, God's people had lost everything and been taken to
Babylon. This was the darkest hour in Old Testament history. Now
their captors wanted to hear the songs of victory that the
Israelites were famous for.
"Sing to us! Play us your victory songs you
offer to your God".
The
world still needs to see victory, joy, and peace in our lives
when everything is going wrong. They are watching
our reactions! We can have a song when things are tough
because our faith is in the Lord.
